Archaeological excavations led by Prof. Dr. Şahin Yıldırım at the Tios Ancient City in Filyos (Çaycuma, Zonguldak) have revealed the largest and most extensive necropolis from the Roman Imperial Period ever discovered in the Black Sea Region.

Excavations in the northern necropolis uncovered 154 sarcophagus graves and 30 chamber tombs dating to the Roman Imperial Period. More than 1,000 archaeological artifacts were also found during the work.

According to Prof. Dr. Yıldırım, Tios has two large necropolis areas, one in the north and one in the south. The northern necropolis is the earliest and was used from the 6th century BC to the 7th century AD. In addition to Roman-period tombs, burial practices continued into the Middle Byzantine Period, including simple tile graves and the reuse of some chamber tombs. With these features, the northern necropolis is considered the most comprehensive cemetery area in the Black Sea Region.

The excavations also showed that Tios was an important port and trade center during the Roman and Byzantine periods. Underwater research revealed 14 shipwrecks, most of which date to the Roman Imperial Period.
